Plans for a massive Carmike Cinemas movie theater in east Montgomery cleared a final hurdle last week as the movie theater received its building permit, and construction is ready to begin.
The 13-screen theater is landing at 10477 Chantilly Parkway. It will seat 2,800 people and feature one of the chain’s signature “Big D” digital auditoriums, with an 81-foot floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall screen.
It will cost almost $8.5 million to build.
Benning Construction Co. out of Smyrna, Ga., is handling the project. The company has built more than 200 theaters over the past 50 years, including the historic Plaza Theater in Atlanta. It also has experience building “Big D” auditoriums for Carmike.
Carmike Cinemas has said it plans to opens the theater early next year.
It will face some competition from the former Rave Cinemas theater in Festival Plaza about four miles away. AMC purchased that theater late last year and has plans for renovations and upgrades. It’s currently the city’s highest-grossing cinema complex.
