The Pike Road School Board will interview the last of three candidates for the position of school superintendent on Friday, February 21, 2014. A full day is planned for the candidate, who will also have the opportunity to meet members of the community and learn about the history and vision of the Town of Pike Road. A public reception will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 PM at Pike Road Town Hall. The public is also invited to listen to the public interview of the candidate, which will begin at 6:00 PM in the council chamber at Town Hall.

The third and final interview will be with Dr. Suzanne Freeman, a two-time graduate of Auburn University’s College of Education. Freeman was one of four finalists for National School Superintendent of the Year in 2009.  Freeman, who earned a doctorate in early childhood education from Auburn University, was named in October 2008 as the state superintendent of the year by the School Superintendents of Alabama. Freeman served as the superintendent of schools in Trussville, Ala., where she led the system through the construction of a state-of-the-art high school and successfully launched unique high school curriculum additions including the state’s first biomedical academy.

In her application materials, Freeman communicated her belief in gaining input from parents and community stakeholders so that everyone feels ownership of their school. While at Trussville, Freeman was consistently recognized by the school board for her ability to motivate students and to use cutting-edge classroom concepts. Before becoming Trussville’s superintendent, Freeman served in the same capacity for Cullman City Schools for four years. She had previously worked as the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for Auburn City Schools and as a principal in that system.  Currently retired from public education, Freeman works as an education consultant.
